Counseling Services
The majority of the psychotherapy services provided at MJB Counseling occur in an individual format. The type of mental health therapy approach utilized is based on an individual’s specific needs and goals. However, it is not uncommon for counseling services to blend different types of therapies together throughout the course of treatment. Whether you are seeking counseling for young adults, adolescents, or children, you can access what you need through MJB Counseling.
Individual Therapy
Relational Therapy
Relational Therapy is a type of psychotherapy that focuses on how an individual’s relationships with others impact their well-being. This approach emphasizes the idea that healthy and fulfilling relationships are crucial for our overall emotional health, and having healthy relationships with others is the primary goal. In sessions, interactional patterns will be explored, and we will work together to improve relationship skills by examining past experiences along with current relational dynamics.
Attachment-Based Therapy
Attachment-Based Therapy focuses on helping individuals develop secure relationships with others by addressing the impact of early childhood experiences and attachment patterns on their current interactions. The goal of this therapy is to help individuals develop a secure attachment style, allowing them to feel comfortable with intimacy, trust others and regulate their emotions effectively within relationships.
Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy

Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy explores how our thought patterns affect our mood and behavior. The goal of this treatment is to learn to identify and challenge automatic negative thoughts, also known as cognitive distortions. Whether those disturbing thoughts are a result of anxiety, depression, or trauma, clients will learn how to develop supportive coping skills such as meditation, EFT/tapping, or movement-based strategies to name a few, while learning to restructure how their brain thinks.
Neurodivergent Therapy
Neurodivergent Therapy focuses on the treatment of individuals with ADHD and Autism Spectrum Disorders, Dyslexia, and anyone else who presents a “neurological difference.” In short, this refers to people whose brains process information in a way that is not typical of most individuals. All humans are inherently different from one another, and this special population is therefore treated just as uniquely, respectfully, and affirmingly in our office as everyone else. The focus of treatment for neurodivergent individuals encompasses many areas. It often includes learning executive functioning skills, social skills, emotional regulation, impulse control, unmasking, and daily living skills. Neurodivergent individuals sometimes also need support in processing past trauma, learning to challenge obsessive thoughts, and allowing themselves to have trust in relationships. Regardless of the complexity that these individuals bring with them into the therapy room, MJB Counseling has the knowledge and expertise to support them.
EMDR
EMDR is an evidence-based psychotherapy for Post-traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD). In addition, successful outcomes are well-documented in the literature for EMDR treatment of other psychiatric disorders, mental health problems, and somatic symptoms. The model on which EMDR is based, Adaptive Information Processing (AIP), posits that much of psychopathology is due to the maladaptive encoding of and/or incomplete processing of traumatic or disturbing adverse life experiences. This impairs the client’s ability to integrate these experiences in an adaptive manner. The eight-phase, three-pronged process of EMDR facilitates the resumption of normal information processing and integration. This treatment approach, which targets past experience, current triggers, and future potential challenges, results in the alleviation of presenting symptoms, a decrease or elimination of distress from the disturbing memory, improved view of the self, relief from bodily disturbance, and resolution of present and future anticipated triggers.

Family Support
Family Support sessions are provided at MJB Counseling as an adjunct to a child or adolescent’s individual therapy. Family support sessions are not family therapy. These inclusive sessions focus on providing coaching to parents as they work to understand their child or adolescent’s behavioral or developmental difficulty. This service can illuminate communication patterns and parenting styles that help or hinder the whole family’s growth and healing process. Psychoeducation regarding their loved one’s mental health is often provided at these appointments, and the need for additional services can be identified, such as family therapy, individual or couples therapy for the adults involved.
Care Coordination
Care Coordination is offered at MJB Counseling, as we strive to provide comprehensive coordination of services to all our clients. Frequently clients present with more than one mental health or medical issue that impacts their functioning at home or in the community. Often during their struggles, individuals are not aware of other services or providers that can assist them in meeting their recovery goals. With care coordination, we are able to locate additional therapies for our clients, link them to social opportunities or community organizations, and help advocate for appropriate accommodations at school or work when needed.
